The skinny on the skinny
Well, here's Hampton. In all his skinny, ribs-sticking-out glory. *sigh* Not the best photo of him but you get the idea. Hopefully in about a month I will have a better picture to show you! :) In my gut, I am pretty certain that the quality of the hay at this barn is a big part of his weight problem. When we lived at The Barn From Hell last summer, he stayed in excellent weight and he wasn't even on free choice hay. I have battled weight issues at this current farm with both T-Bone and Hampton. So, I have two choices. 1) Move barns. Or 2) Find a way to compensate for the lack of nutrition in the hay (free choice grass roundbales).
In any case, I did cram wormer down his throat yesterday and today he gets lunged. Super easy week for him right before our barn's horse show. lol. As for me, I'm chopping off my long hair this morning. Yay for a fresh new summer look. (and cooler!!)
And thank you for everyone's feed suggestions! I am researching, making phone calls and coming up with a plan for Hampton for the long term.
Oh, and here's a butt shot. *whistle whistle*

UGH... I'm going through the weight battle with P also. His is an ulcer thing, I'm pretty sure, but still... I think he's giving ME ulcers. Good Luck!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'll be in your neck of the woods in August for a clinic - would love to work it out to come by and meet Mr. Hampton!
In the same boat with my Val. My trainer thinks he looks fine, but I would like to see a few more #'s on him. We had a hay issue over the winter as well, but the problem was foxtail barley. I'm praying he hasn't gotten an ulcer from ingesting the foxtail...
ReplyDeleteI have been using cocosoya oil for the last month or so, and he's starting to fill back in. He LOVES the taste... great shine too :)
Alfalfa is doing the trick for Wizard. I feed him an extra few flakes as snacks. Aside from the nutritional value, alfalfa has the added benefit of calcium, which helps if ulcers are an issue. Not a fix for everyone, but it has worked really well for the rangy TB in my life. Good luck!
