Need more bend for actual pirouette
By some miracle the humidity let up this week and I have been able to get good rides in on both boys pretty consistently. (you know, without any of us dying and all)
Hampton has been feeling fantastic (knocking on wood). The shoeing changes and injections have him feeling great and I am finding some new gears and improved balance. Interestingly enough, his teeth grinding has diminished considerably. Other than fighting some face fungus, he is looking really good - even a little ... umm plump. So I am upping his cardio a bit since I'd rather not muzzle him unless I have to.

Piaffing it
On Hampton's schedule:
* Tightening up the canter pirouettes (totally me, not his fault)
* Keeping the tempi changes straight. He loves to throw his haunches around, which I can manage in the 4s but once I try the 3s it gets a little wild and I lose control. rawr.
* Maintaining the "Wellington Trot" in everything we do. I've been more insistent on this. You must now trot in that balance in half pass, SI, HI, all the time except warm up and cool down. I am sometimes half halting every damn stride. No more diving down. Just no.
* Canter half pass zig zag. This actually goes pretty well but I could be crisper with the change to half pass back to the rail.
* Miles and miles of centerlines. I know, sounds boring. But this has been a super exercise for days where I don't do much collected work or difficult shit. Sometimes I halt at X, sometimes I act like I want to but change my mind.
* Cardio days including canter sets and lots of stretching at the trot.
He has come so far in just a year. I am so glad he seems to be feeling better! I am still on the hunt for a new saddle, but for now he is fine with a thinline pad with shims. No more back soreness!
... and who can forget about the skaddlebred!
Royale has been working 3-4 times a week. He is much less bothered by the heat than Hampton is and will not run out of energy.
On Royale's schedule:
* Keeping the same tempo. He runs because he loses his balance, so we are working on half halting with the seat, and teaching some counter bend so he cannot run through his right shoulder. So normal, he isn't being naughty.
* Lifting his back. Sometimes he gets a little too deep (see photo) but I'm not worried about this. His nose will come out as soon as I can lift his belly and back with my legs and seat more. For him (not all horses), getting a little too deep is better than sucking his neck back into my lap.
* Balance at the canter. This is improving a lot! It's not quite so speedy anymore, and he has moments where I am like "Dayam son, FEI will be cake for you." But still a ways to go. Like a LONG WAY.
* Turn on the forehand. He is an ace at this now.
*Baby leg yields. Really improving at walk and trot.
|
A little short in the neck but actually taking good contact here.
* Many hacks outside the arena. He walks, trots, canters willingly out in the open fields and hills. Does not get wild or stupid.
* Ground poles. Trots over 1 or 2 poles, but cannot seem to figure out 3 just yet. lol.
*Baths. Improving! (thanks 98 degree weather). Still not to the point where I can tie him, but will now tolerate being hosed off even though I still get a major glare from him and snorting.

A little deep again here, but at least his back opens up.
He needs to get out to a show soon so I'll see what I can find locally maybe. He is really growing up, although I still consider him pretty immature for his age.
Hampton will be back out in August.
AT PRIX ST. GEORGE.
Yeah. I buried the lede. Ha. I'm just going to go for it.
Got nothing to lose (except money but since when do us horse people care about that).
