Do you want the good news or bad news first?
The good news is that Hampton has not only been sound since his bursa injection, but he is starting to feel AMAZING again. He hasn't felt like this all year. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that we finally got him and whatever was bothering him. Things could go downhill again of course, but we are now almost 2 weeks post injection. Total best case scenario right now.

This week Hampton decided to stop sweating. He has come in from the field twice now with increased respiration, flared nostrils, not sweating and generally looked miserable.
Thankfully after hosing him for 5-10 minutes he is back to normal and is otherwise drinking, pooping and peeing just fine. I have never dealt with a horse with anhydrosis before so all tips and tricks welcome.
I did run out and get him some One AC, and I think I'll try giving him a beer with breakfast as well. And of course we already school in the mornings to help beat the heat. He already gets electrolytes, too.
He has always been one to tolerate the heat very well. And has always been a profuse sweater, so much so that people make fun of him. So I'm pretty worried that he has suddenly shut down. I imagine because it's been 90+ degrees daily for a month straight with 10000% humidity, and no real relief at night.
2020 is just giving everyone all sorts of hell. I mean geez!
And as of this blog post we are still on track for 2 shows in August. With covid surging everything is always up in the air but that's the plan for now!

ReplyDeleteA few years ago during a long humid spell, Jack stopped sweating. He WOULD NOT TOUCH beer (go figure), so I ended up putting him on AniMed SweatAgain and it worked like a charm! For two years I made sure to start it again in the spring and taper off on the fall. This year I left him off it, just to see, and he's sweating like normal (although I watch carefully!).
ugh.... my friend is into year 2 of dealing with anhydrosis now and it's stressful AF. definitely let us know if you find something that works for Hamps!

ReplyDeleteLast summer and now this summer as well, Val stopped sweating when we hit 90's with 90% humidity. Also seems like when the nighttime temps don't go below 80 is when the trouble starts - but who knows. OneAC and Guinness Stout is what has worked for us...
I had an older horse that stopped sweating a few years ago, and the beer really helped. But my vet says it has to be a dark beer. We used guinness.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, we had one particularly hot and humid day last week and both my horses had trouble sweating. No issues before or since, so I'm chalking it up to the extreme day. Hopefully that is all it was for your guy too! Glad his foot feels good so far!
