Notice really how enormous Hampton is ...
Lately I have been having trouble with the right half pass. Hampton would get stuck, not really bend, not bring the haunches, go rein lame, you name it.
I was starting to think that maybe he really does need a major vet workup because the left half pass is FINE. Lovely, in fact.
Remember this for later.
....
Back at a schooling show in May, I threw my back out. Like, I had to stop riding and catch my breath. That sort of thing just never happens to me. Throughout this year, this same pain has been chronic - on and off. It is the left side of my lower back.

My when my back hurts all the time Or, Buckley when is food bowl is empty.
Over the past month or so, it was getting to the point where it was difficult for me to even put my socks on in the morning. Or sit in the car. Anytime I put weight on my left leg, my back would spasm. Anytime I bent over. Even at sometimes random moments. Cantering Hampton would become painful - and thus I would brace and that didn't help anything.
After 3 visits to the chiro, and 2 massages from 2 different people - I was no better.
What the hell.
So on Tuesday I saw a physical therapist. She worked on me for well over an hour. She explained that my SI joint AND pelvis were pretty torqued up and to the left. It was so bad, that even my collar bone was up on the left. My entire body was affected.
While she was working on me, she said "You know, this type of injury I have seen from people who have jumped off something. It is an impact injury."
That's interesting, I thought. What tall thing do I jump off of on a daily basis?!?!

The guilty party
So after seeing the miracle worker, and one pill of Tramadol (a narcotic. I sure did not feel any pain the rest of the day but it made me feel AWFUL! How do drug addicts function?!) ... I felt only a few twinges the day after, and today I have been pain free.
So no more jumping off Hampton for a while. That's ok, he will stand by the mounting block while I climb down. Sorry pal, your human is getting old.
I guess if you own a 17 hand horse, maybe be more careful dismounting and don't just plop down like you are 15 years old again. That is the lesson here kids.
.....
When I rode Hampton in my lesson, guess what.
Right half pass no problem.

Glad you figured it out!!
ReplyDeleteOoo This is definitely good to know :) As another owner of a 17hh horse, I guess I should be a bit more careful about just jumping off at the end haha. I'm glad you feel better!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's totally fascinating that dismounting can do that much damage. Glad you figured it out though, especially since it prevented you from eating Nick's amazing food in May. Can't let that happen again!
ReplyDeleteFunny how horses are such mirrors of us.
ReplyDeleteThat really sucks about your back though. I hope you are able to continue seeing the PT and get it worked out... my husband has a PT that has kept him out of surgery for three different injures. A good one is basically worth their weight in gold!
It's always something. Glad you got it sorted out.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good warning! I tend to jump off everything willy nilly too. Something to think about and glad the PT was able to help you!
ReplyDeleteWow! Fascinating that dismounting could do that. Also I always thing it's amazing how fairly small irregularities in our evenness majorly effect our horses
ReplyDeleteWow I never would have thought of that being the cause!
ReplyDeleteSo interesting...never would have thought of an injury from an intentional dismount!
ReplyDeleteOh man I've had chronic SI issues for a while and they're SO PAINFUL, definitely affected my ability to ride movements as well. Interesting about the jumping off, I'm going to start being more careful too! The only issue I've had getting off is if I'm already having SI problems that day, I usually have to aim to land on the stronger leg (since the weak leg usually has sciatica). Glad you figured out what is going on and are feeling better!
ReplyDeleteThis is the worst! I just went through the same thing... I had to use cooking tongs to pull my socks on for a week! And I'm with you on the Tramadol. F*&$ that sh*t. I took it for a day after my dog bite and it almost sent me back into the ER ^.^ JOY! Well I really hope this solves the problem and you get better soon! There are a lot of lower back stretches that help, along with heating pads!
ReplyDeleteOmg that sounds awful in every way - hope you're feeling better!! Also now I'm all nervous about dismounting haha. I'm kinda a freak about it anyway since I'm still all paranoid after breaking my leg last year.... So this just adds to that feeling lol
ReplyDeleteUgh, back pain is NEVER fun but at least you know what it is now!
ReplyDeleteThe story of my life. Horse won't do something. I try and try and get frustrated... only to find out it's because I'm doing something dumb. VERY HELPFUL RIDER. Very helpful, heh
