Photo of the day

Since the economy is tanking, and newspapers are circling the drain ... I've been revisiting my obsession and joy of photography. I did not pursue photography as a career (even though I LOVED it all through high school, college and still do) because "there is no money in photography." Ironically, I'm now a journalist. Facing a furlough and maybe a 5% pay cut. SO ... I purchased a fish-eye lens on ebay to help expand my portfolio. I need to really get out and shoot more. It's always been a hobby of mine, but maybe it's time to pursue something career related?

I'm obsessed with amazing photos. Here's today's fav: (not mine, from Festival Friendly)

what she said

“I have a love/hate relationship with the internet, as I imagine most writers do. As a research tool, it’s become invaluable, but as a distraction and waste of creative time it’s just this side of serious drug use.”

I wonder what stories this bus would share if it could talk?

Lexington - help!

Ok for all my peeps in the Lexington area, here's the deal. I'm spending a bit more time in the city than originally planned, and I need stuff to do. I've got a tour for Three Chimney's booked, and plan on asking about Claiborne. Any other farms to visit? I'm not sure I'll be able to make it to Keenland at 5 a.m. to watch horses work, but it's a possibility. I know the Horse Park is under construction, and I've been there dozens of times, so it's not a priority. Any other suggestions for things to visit during the day (horse or not horse-related is fine). Nightspots? Other things to do? I'll be arriving Tuesday night and leaving Thursday morning. Thanks for your help!

Today's hilljack photo brought to you by ...

Brookston, Indiana!

This was featured in an area newspaper (NOT the one I work at). Brookston is actually the town in which T-Bone lives. *sigh*. Not only do I find this particular photo screaming with hill-billy goodness, it's also dangerous. And the school must not care about their floors because I am sure the donkeys not only scratched it, but pooed and peed all over it. Geez, people. Geez. Seriously?

At least they are wearing helmets.

A trip to Three Chimneys ...

I'm slowly planning my vacation/furlough for the beginning of March. Besides the Phish reunion show, I plan to also make the best of the 5 days of free time. One thing I have wanted to do for quite a long time is visit Three Chimneys farm in Lexington. So I booked my tour and I'm pretty amped about seeing such greats such as:
• Big Brown (whom I adore!)
• Smarty Jones (another of my favs)

• Dynaformer (Barbaro's sire)
• Point Given (Preakness and Belmont winner)

... and more ponies. I really want to see their breeding operations as I am sure they are top notch. Plus, its early March ... you KNOW there will be foals on the ground. :-)
Anyone else have any recommendations for a trip from Indy, to Lexington, to Hampton, VA? I'm thinking I may stop by Virginia beach at some point, but the weather won't be nice enough to even wade in the ocean. Still like the ocean regardless.
